5 Levels of smart wellbeing – What electricians need to know

On the InstallerELECTRIC theatre at InstallerSHOW, Jason Girarider from Snap One is hosting a session on the 5 Levels of smart wellbeing.

Taking place on Thursday, 26 June at 11am, this will look at home Automation for Family, Planet, and Enhanced Wellness.

Installer spoke to Jason about what electricians can expect from his talk and the opportunity in the market:

What is smart wellbeing?

From our experience, end users want to know and understand the lifestyle benefits of a system rather than the fact that the main brain has a quad core processor in it with fail-over redundancy!  With this in mind, we’ll be looking at five key areas where the automated home can have a positive impact on the occupants’ wellbeing and the overall sustainability of the household itself – these areas are sleep, individual needs, operational carbon, clutter, and maintenance. Engaging with your client about smart home technology in a ‘non-tech’ way is perhaps a slightly different type of conversation, one which can lead the focus away from gadgets, and more towards the benefits to the occupants’ lifestyles.

How big is automation for the industry?

The awareness of smart tech is at its highest, and it’s increasing all the time. In 202,0 there was an estimated 12.86 billion smart home devices in homes, that’s a lot of demand! By the end of this year, over half of UK households will at least have a smart device in their home, be that a Nest thermostat, smart door lock, Alexa, network cameras etc. This slice of the market is growing rapidly, and we truly believe that we are just getting started. Think of the conversations you are having with your customers, how many adverts you see for tech on TV these days, the smart devices you have in your home, compared to just a few years ago. The smart home market really is on the rise.

How big is the opportunity for electricians?

When an end user begins to understand the breadth of possibilities of a smart operating system, the advantage of using a specialist becomes apparent. A smart home pro will:

  • Help avoid potential issues by working with the client as early as possible.
  • Advise on the best devices for the client.
  • Design solutions to get the best from every device.
  • Create customised, integrated scenes that enhance the client’s lifestyle.
  • Ensure the client can personalise the system after the smart home pro leaves.
  • Design the interface so different members of the family can access it in the ways that suit them best.
  • Ensure the system is secure so the client is not vulnerable to cybercrime.
  • Ensure the network has sufficient bandwidth to support additional devices in the future, whether that’s for them or for when they sell their property.
  • Ensure that ongoing maintenance is carried out, as well as ongoing upgrades!

What will your session focus on at InstallerSHOW?

Our session aims to educate installers on the opportunities in the smart home industry and how focusing on occupants’ wellbeing and the overall sustainability of the household can make for a valuable conversation and ongoing relationships with end users. We will explore the difference between DIY vs Pro install and the routes that installers have to get a slice of the action.

Why should installers join?

Installers should join if they are interested in exploring the growing desire for convenience, sustainability, and wellbeing in the home and how the custom install industry can help solve this for end users. Installers will come away with practical solutions for busy lifestyles and tools for creating healthier and more comfortable living environments.
